Probability Flashcards
probability
numerical measure of the likelihood that an event will occur
P(A) = 1 means what?
that an event is certain to occur
P(A)= 0 means what?
that an event is certain NOT to occur
random experiment
process that generates well defined experimental outcomes ; on repetitions of experiment (trials), only one experimental outcome will occur purely by chance
sample space
set of all experimental outcomes (denoted S)
combination
way of selecting items from a collection, such that the order of selection doesn’t matter
factorials
denoted (var!), counts the # of ways to order n objects without repetition
permutation
arranging all members of a set into some sequence or order, and the order of selection matters - denoted P(N,n)
major rules for assigning probabilities to outcomes
- 0 <= P(A) <=1 must be true
- for a set of k outcomes, P(A1) + P(A2)…P(Ak) must = 1
