What is a transfer
A device by which the propagandist links authority or prestige to something well respected and revered (church or nation) to something the would have us accept.
Eg a political activist closes her speech with a prayer
What is a testimonial
A public figure or celebrity endorses a a product , policy or political candidate
What techniques are special appeals
- Plain folks
- Bandwagon
- Fear
What is the plain folks technique
Attempt to convince the audience that a prominent person and his ideas are “of the people” . Same interests at heart.
Famous people shopping for groceries
Bandwagon technique
Makes the appeal that everyone is doing it so you should too
“Everyone is buying a ford”
How is fear used as a Technique
Plays on deep seated fears and warns the audience that disaster will occur if they do not follow a particular course of action
Insurance company pamphlet of a house destroyed by a flood
What are two logical fallacies techniques
Bad logic
Unwarranted extrapolation
What is bad logic
An illogical message that is not necessarily propagandistic , a logical mistake (unless it is deliberately manipulated to support the cause)
What is unwarranted extrapolation
huge predictions of the future on the basis of few small facts
Name calling?
Links a person , idea etc to a negative symbol
Eg. Commie, fascist
