Q

What is the margin of safety model?

A

It is a more sophisticated version of the factor of safety principle, where statistical models can be used, where the values can be modelled as normally distributed variables.

Q

What is fault tree analysis?

A

A fault-tree analysis can be simply described as an analytical technique, whereby an undesired state of a system is specified (usually a state that is
critical from a safety standpoint), and the system is then analysed in the context of its environment and operation to find all credible ways in which the
undesired event can occur. The fault-tree itself is a graphical model of the various parallel and sequential combinations of faults that will result in the occurrence of the predefined undesirable event. A fault-tree thus depicts the logical inter-relationships of basic events that lead to the undesired event - which is at the top of the fault tree.
