What 4 things must I do to proactively be ahead of stress through the day
- Proactively check in on what state im in. Breathe - sensation with no need for explanation
- Separate stressful situations vs. your own personal stress.
- Be a creative problem solver and take action - don’t be a powerless victim.
- Proactively communicate expectations.
Stressed with people: first and foremost …. and only then
First & foremost..
1. Tune into the person’s intentions
2. Tune into your breath - make sure you’re not holding your breath
3. Let the moment pass through you before you speak
And only then …
4. Never make it personal. Always focus the conversation around the problem.
5. Communicate your perspective with a smile.
6. Don’t try and win the war in every moment - skillfully influence people over time.
The discipline of working hard is about…?
All progress is hard mentally and emotionally - if you don’t embrace that uncertainty, there is no progress.
Working hard is about giving everything you have - which helps you sleep well.
The 5 principles of my vision for fostering a great team where people want my leadership?
- Complementary strengths across one team: A team where different people’s strengths complement mine, and together we all help each other elevate
- Im the coach, they’re the players: My job is to ensure the player is clear and confident in their own abilities when it comes to game day, and im not on the pitch.
- Strong relationships take the work of proactive communication around expectations. Take out the guesswork of what’s good and bad behaviour.
- Create psychological safety so people say whats on their mind
- Consistent behaviour is the only thing that counts for me and others.
What is the core principle of establishing expectations and behaviors?
What is the framework?
Continuously provide keep it-up / how-to get better feedback.
Always very matter-of-fact - no emotion.
Can I give you feedback? (make sure they are open to receive)
When you do x (specific behaviour, never about a person),
the impact is y (focus on the impact to you, never assume intentions),
and that means z (why it’s good/ not good).
Moving forward (focus on next time) how can continue/do that differently? (engage them in the solution/ ownership)
Always looking fwd, never back + always about the bavhiour never the person
When is the only time your frustration is valid?
It’s ONLY EVER cause for frustration if you’ve consistently communicated expectations - someone has agreed, and they don’t do it.
