Private Pilot Flashcards
Private Pilot Privileges and Limitations
- You can not for hire.
- cannot pay less than pro-rata share of the operating expenses when flying passengers.
- can participate in search and locate missions and receive reimbursement,
- can act as pilot-in-command to tow gliders and unpowered ultralight vehicles.
Characteristics of a High Pressure system…
air moves outward, downward, and clockwise
Characteristics of a Low Pressure system…
air moves inward, upward, and counterclockwise.
What weather should you expect with a low pressure system?
low pressure is associated with rising air which is conductive to cloudiness, precipitation and bad weather.
What weather should you expect with a high pressure system?
high pressure system is an area of descending air which tends leads to dissipating cloudiness and good weather.
Cold front…
occurs when a mass of cold, dense, stable, air takes over a warmer body of air
Warm front…
when a warm air mass contacts and flows over a colder air mass.
Occluded front…
occurs when a fast-moving cold front catches up with a slow-moving warm front
Stationery front…
when the forces of the two air masses are relatively equal, with a mixture of warm and cold weather
Marginal VFR
- Ceiling 1000-3000ft
- Visibility 3-5 SM
- Blue line on Prog Chart
IFR
- ceiling less than 1000ft
- visibility less than 1 SM
- RED line on Prog Chart
Orange Dashed Line on Significant Weather Chart
Moderate Turbulence
What is a dry line?
an area/line that separates dry and moist air masses
trough…
elongated area of low pressure
ridge…
elongated area of high pressure
Characteristics of Stable Air…
stratiform clouds, smooth air, steady precip., fair to poor visibility
Characteristics of Unstable Air…
cumuliform clouds, rough air/turb., showery precip., and good visibility
What conditions are necessary for structural icing to occur?
visible moisture and below freezing temperatures at the point moisture hits the aircraft.
What factors must be present for a thunderstorm to form?
moist, unstable air, with a lifting force/motion
What are the three stages of a thunderstorm?
- cumulus, updrafts
- mature, precip., lightning
- dissipating, downdrafts, rain starts to dissipate
temperature inversion…
when temperature increases with height, a reverse from a usual decrease in temp. with gained altitude
what is wind shear?
change of wind direction and speed, and occurs at any level in atmosphere
what is a microburst?
A microburst is a localized column of sinking air (downdraft) within a thunderstorm and is usually less than or equal to 2.5 miles in diameter
