Du’a
Means supplication (asking)
When a Muslim asks for help, forgiveness or gratitude
Said in any language
Salah (compared to Du’a)
At certain times in the day (Du’a is anytime)
Requires Wudu (Du’a does not)
Said in Arabic (Du’a is said in any language)
Usually in congregation (Du’a less so)
Compulsory (Du’a is not)
Prayer beads
Passed between thumb and forefinger, used to recite 99 names or repeat phrases (Subhan Allah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar)
Zakah (meaning)
Means purification, purifies a persons heart from greed
Muslims possessions are given by Allah so they should share their wealth and support others
Sadaqah
Means sincerity
Further voluntary donations with no guidelines
“Every act of goodness is charity”
Sawm
Fasting during Ramadan, 4th pillar of Sunni Islam
9th month of Islamic year, when Quran was first revealed to the Prophet
Go without food/ drink/ sex during daylight hours
“Fasting has been prescribed for you… so that you may become mindful of God”
Repentance
Asking for forgiveness of sins
Hajj
Means to set out for a definitive purpose
Performed on last month of the year (the next day being Eid al Adr
Must be in state of Ihram (holiness)
