- Pilgrims on Hajj and Muslims over the world sacrifice an animal
- Remembrance of when Allah gave a lamb for Ibrahim to sacrifice instead of his son (Ishma’il)

How is Eid al adha celebrated
A
- Follow traditions of prophet Muhammed
- Animal is slaughtered in traditional Muslim way as “In the name of God, God is the greatest” is said
- prayers at the mosque + khutbah
- meat is shared out

Meaning of Eid al Adha
A
- Demonstration of Muslim willingness to make sacrifices for Allah
- Time to be thankful for Allahs provision

- Shia and Sunni
- celebrating end of Ramadan when crescent moon is sighted
- Muslims give special charity (Zakah) before prayers (including Khutbah)
- time to be thankful for Allah and the success in completion of fasting (+ reward in the afterlife)
- remember those who have died

- Celebrating last sermon of Prophet Muhammed
- Shia believe this was the day he appointed Ali as his successor
- complete specific prayers to affirm their commitment to the first Imam (Ali)

- his death is shown as symbol of struggle against injustice and oppression
- shias participate in public mourning and grief
