What is the Koori Court? (5)
The Koori Court is a system designed to stop over-representation by Aboriginals within the legal system.
All parties sit around a single table (regular court parties + Aboriginal elders)
Accused has to be charged with an offence that can be heard at the Magistrate’s Court.
Adults have to plead guilty in order to access.
Kids will go to Koori Court unless the nature of the offence is sexual.
What is an ACJP?
Aboriginal Community Justice Panel, been in operation since 1988 and are staffed by volunteers designed to assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons in custody.
How many recommendations came out of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody?
339 total, 136 recommendations which required implementation.
