Principles Of Teaching Flashcards
What is a Universal Action?
Which pose is the blueprint for all others?
Essential muscle engagements that can be taught in every yoga pose to create optimal alignment.
Tadasana is the blueprint pose for all others.
What are paired universal actions for the feet & ankles?
What does this cue accomplish?
Lift the inner arch of your foot (medial) as you press your outer ankle in (lateral)
This cue helps flatten the foot.
What are paired Universal Actions for the pelvic girdle?
Point your tailbone down to the floor (anterior tilt) as you roll your pelvis up and in (posterior tilt).
To level out your hips in the sagittal plane (front & back)
What are paired Universal Actions for the shoulder girdle?
Knit your front ribs in (stratus anterior engagement) as you broaden through your shoulders (rhomboid engagement).
Creates space in the chest & back. Reduces spine curvature/corrects posture.
What are Paired Universal Actions for the neck & head?
Lift your chin (neck extension) as you lengthen the back of your neck (neck flexors).
This levels your head & straightens your spine.
What is a diagonal dual action for downward facing dog?
Press into your thumb mounds as you roll your forearms out.
What is a diagonal dual action for the leg in Triangle Pose?
Root into your big toe mound & wrap your bum under.
Give an example of a risk factor in the transition between chair and twisted chair.
Write a stabilizing cue (as you would say, in class) that would address that risk factor .
Risk factor:
Twisting in the low back (lumbar spine) risking the spine to go out of alignment .
The lumbar spine is one of the weaker parts of the spine.
Stabilizing Cue:
“Inhale as you lengthen your spine, exhale as you twist through the upper spine.”
When you observe a student, what should you look for at first?
Body shape (tall, skinny, broad)
Temperament
Where are they compensating? What parts of the body? What sides of the body?
What is a Simple Action?
