Principles of Pharmacology Flashcards
1
Q
Define pharmacokinetics.
A
effect of a body on the drug (bioavailability, absorption, distribution, elimination)
2
Q
Define pharmacodynamics.
A
effect of the drug on the body (side effects, therapeutics, mechanism of action)
3
Q
List determinants of distribution.
A
- size of target
- blood flow
- solubility
- binding to receptors
4
Q
Contrast zero and first order elimination.
A
- First Order: elimination of drug is dependent on concentration of drug in circulation
- Zero Order: elimination of druge is independent of concentration of drug in circulation
5
Q
Describe multicomponent distribution.
A
drug is distributed to many different compartments (blood, tissues, neurons, etc.)
- undergoes a distribution phase as it equilibrates among these compartments
- then, it undergoes an elimination phase
- both phases have their own half life
6
Q
Describe single component distribution.
A
drug is only distributed to the vascular compartments of the body
7
Q
Define Type I, II, and II Receptors.
A
Type I - plasma membrane (ACh, norepi)
Type II - cytoplasm (steroids)
Type III - nuclear (anticancer drugs)
