Principles of organisation and Animal tissues, organ and organ systems Flashcards
Function of enzymes
Enzymes speed up chemical reactions.
What are enzymes?
Enzymes are large protein molecules and they have a groove on their surface called the actual side.
Where is bile made in?
Bile is made in the liver and is stored in the gall bladder.
Function of artery
Carries blood away from the heart. (HIGH PRESSURE)
Function of vein
Carries blood to to the heart. (Low pressure)
Function of capillary
Carries blood to tissues and cells
Connects arteries and veins
Structure of artery
Thick, muscular and elastic walls.
The walls can stretch and withstand high pressure.
Small lumen
Function of vein
Carries blood to the heart (low pressure)
Structure of vein
have values to stop blood flowing the wrong way.
Thin walls
Large lumen
Function of capillary
Carries blood to tissues and cells
Connects arteries and veins
structure of capillary
One cell thick
Very narrow lumen
What does the coronary arteries do?
The coronary arteries supply blood to the heart muscle.
What are statins?
Statins are medications used to lower the level of cholesterol in the blood and protect the insides of the artery walls.
