Principles of Membrane Transport II: Diffusion of Electrolytes Flashcards
1
Q
Describe ion-selective channels
A
The pathways are integral proteins
Each ion has it’s own specific protein channel
All ion channels have gates
Channel gates open and close in response to hormones, chemicals, and drugs
2
Q
What are the forces that make an electrolyte move across a cell membrane?
A
Move in response to a concentration gradient
Ion don’t move independently of each other. Like charges repel and opposite charges attract.
So, electrolytes also respond to an electrical driving force.
3
Q
The resting membrane potential for living cells?
A
Between -40 and -90 mV
