When do you use the Ontario Building Code vs the Ontario Fire Code?
OBC for construction – buildings the building
OFC for maintenance after occupied
Define means of egress.
Continuous path of travel provided for the escape of persons from any point in a building - includes both exits and access to exits
Define Fire Separation.
A construction assembly that acts as a barrier against the spread of fire and may or may not have a fire resistance rating or a fire protection rating
Define fire resistance rating.
Means the time in hours or fraction thereof that a material or assembly of materials will withstand the passage of flame and the transmission of heat when exposed to fire under specified conditions
Define Fire Protection Rating.
Means the time in hours or fraction thereof that a closure, window assembly or glass block will withstand the passage of flame when exposed to fire under specified conditions
Define Listed.
equipment or material that is accredited by the standards council of Canada published by a certification organization
What does approved mean?
By chief fire official.
What is Group A and its Divisions?
Group A - Assembly
Division 1- for the production and viewing of performing arts
Division 2 - community halls, day care, restaurants, etc.
Division 3 - arena type occupancies, pools.
Division 4 - for open air activities, bleachers, grandstands, etc.
What is Group B and its Divisions?
Group B - Institutional
Division 1 - for restraint or security measures.(prisons)
Division 2 - for supervisory, medical care or treatment.(hospital, nursing homes, etc.)
Division 3 - group homes
What is Group C?
Residential - contains living accommodation and facilities.(boarding houses, hotels, apartments, etc.)
What is Group D?
Business & Per. - offices, banks, hairdressing shops etc.
What is Group E?
Ser. - department stores, supermarkets, restaurants w/ occupancy under 30, etc.
What is Group F and its Divisions?
Group F - Mercantile Industry
Division 1 - High hazard - Bulk plants, cereal mills, grain elevators, paint factories, etc.
Division 2 - Medium Hazard - aircraft hangers, service stations, repair garages, etc.
Division 3 - Light Hazard - power plants, display rooms, workshops, etc.
