Principles of immunity Flashcards
The immune system divided into 2 functional divisions
Innate (natural)
Adaptive (acquired)
Non specific (innate) immunity characteristics
response is antigen independant
immediate maximal response
not antigen specific
no immunological memory
Specific (adaptive) immunity characteristics
antigen dependant
lag time
antigen specific
immunlogical memory
What does the non specific (adaptive) system contain?
Skin GI tract Lung eye serum
whats the major non specific (adaptive) defence mechanism?
humoral immunity
what cells are in the adaptive immune system
WBC (B + T)
Antigen presenting cells
what are 2 principles of clonal selection hypothesis?
- each lymphocyte bears a single type of receptor of unique specificity
- Lymphocytes which recognise self molecules are deleted at an early stage of lymphocyte development
What is the clonal selection hypothesis?
- a single progenitor cell gives rise to a large number of lymphocytes, each with a different specificity
- removal of self reactive immature lymphocytes by clonal delection
- Pool of mature naive lymphocytes
- Proliferation and differentiation of activated specific lymphocytes to form a clone of effector cells
Two classes of the specific (adaptive) immune response?
- Antibody response (Humoral)(B lymphocytes)
2. Cell mediated (T cells)response
Cytotoxic cell activation process?
- Tc-cells have antigen-recognising molecules on thier surfaces called T-cell receptors (TCR)
- Th cells produce cytokines(e.g IL-2,IFN)
- IL-2 causes Tc-cells to mature, divide
What can Cytotoxic T cells become?
- cytotoxic t cells, that kill abnormal cells
- memory cytotoxic T cells
