Refers to the distribution of visual weight in a work, arranges elements in an artwork to create a sense of stability.
Balance
Created by duplicating elements on either side of a line dividing the composition in half.
Symmetrical
Created by giving unlike objects in a composition equal visual weight. More visual weight on one side than the other.
Asymmetrical
Means sunburst, target, or bulls-eye pattern. All elements emit from one spot out.
Radial
Uses the art elements in planned or random repetitions to enhance surfaces of paintings or sculptures. Often occur in nature. May also be Radial.
Pattern
Often found in fabrics, where elements are repeated the same way with accuracy.
Regular or planned pattern
Repeating but in no particular order, not in rows or lines, size may vary.
Irregular or random pattern
Creates visual excitement, using opposites next to each other in a composition.
Contrast
Used by artists to create dominance and/or a focus in an artwork.
Emphasis
Combines elements in a work of art to create the illusion of action. Takes the eye through the composition, this can be done along lines, edges, & shapes within the work.
Movement
The repetition of visual movement of the elements of art. Works with movement to create the visual equivalent of a musical beat.
Rhythm
One of the most important aspects of a well-designed art. Creates a sense of oneness within a composition. To create it, an artist adjusts the parts of a work so they relate to each other and to the whole work.
Unity
Is the way things are arranged in an artwork. Sometimes the artwork will be referred to as this, especially in modern or abstract artworks where there may not be a subject matter.
