define contrast
when two elements are seen for their differences.
what is chiaroscuro?
an example of extreme light and dark in one artwork.
define repetition.
when one object or shape is being repeated.
define pattern.
a combination of elements or shapes repeated in a recurring and regular arrangement.
what is a motif?
a single designed 2D image that repeated in a regular, consistent and predictable way.
what are the classes of pattern?
mosaics, lattices, spirals, meanders, waves, symmetry and fractals, among others
brick or offset patterns:
the line of motifs are moved over so that the next line of motifs fit into the spaces in between the previous line of motifs.
tossed layout:
motifs are randomly scattered within the format.
packed layout:
motifs are closely positioned so that they are touching each other.
ogee layout:
motifs that are designed to be onion shaped so that one row fits into the next.
one way layout:
motifs that face the same direction.
two way layout:
when the motif alternates between facing upward and facing downward
define rhythm.
a combination of elements repeated but which variations.

when an area or object within the artwork that draws the attention and becomes a focal point.

to create a sense of harmony and wholeness, by using similar elements within the composition and placing them in a way that brings them all together.

an interest by using contrasting elements within the composition.

a path created or implied within an artwork that leads the eye through the composition.

the ways in which the elements of art of a piece are arranged.
what is symmetrical balance.
a way of organising the elements of arts so that one side of an artwork duplicates or mirrors the other side.
what is asymmetrical balance?
a way of organising the elements of arts so that one side differs from the other but retains a feeling of harmony.
what is radical balance?
is when all elements radiate out from a centre point in a circular fashion.
