"Principles" by Rai Dalio Flashcards
Flighty person
Unstable, Impermanent. From the book: “Wise people stick with sound fundamentals through the ups and downs, while flighty people react emotionally to how things feel…”
To be (to come) through thick and thin
To come through tough times and challenges
To startle (be startled)
To fright.
FTB: “We were startled by the results”
Handful
Quantity that fills the hand.
FTB: “Making a handful of good uncorrelated bets that are balanced and leveraged well is the surest way of having a lot of upside without being exposed to unacceptable downside.”
To grind
Reduce (something) to small particles or powder by crushing it.
To mill, flour, polish
FTB: “…general acceptance took many years of learning and grinding work by a group of dedicated partners”
To astound
To shock or greatly surprise.
FTB: “The results astounded me. I could not believe that some of them actually thought in the way the test described…”
squemish (about smth)
(of a person) easily made to feel sick, faint, or disgusted, especially by unpleasant images, such as the sight of blood.
FTB: “This was slow going at first largely because most of the physocologists I met were surprisingly squemish about exploring differences.
pervasive
(especially of an unwelcome influence or physical effect) spreading widely throughout an area or a group of people.
FTB:”I wanted them to also own the resposibility of producing pervasive excellence and I wanted to be at their service in helping them achieve it”
suck the marrow out of life
Sucking all of the marrow out of life is all about living in the present moment. Instead of comparing now to the future or the past, we can command ourselves to stop giving our lives away.
