rooting (search) reflex
Stimuli applied to the cheek causes the baby to turn their head and open their mouth
sucking reflex
Stimulus of the lips causes the infant to latch on to the source and begin sucking
moro reflex
the startle response and search for support when feeling like falling
palmar grasp reflex
stimulus in the palm causes the four fingers to flex the hand closed
Asymmetrical tonic neck reflex (ATNR)
When the head turns to one side – the upper limb on that side extends and the opposite flexes
Tonic labyrinthine reflex (TLR)
- Prone: increase in flexor tone (limbs flex)
- Supine: increase in extensor tone (limbs extend)
Plantar grasp reflex
Stimuli applied to the ball of the foot causes the toes to curl
Babinski reflex
Stimuli applied to the lateral or bottom part of the foot causes the toes to fan out
Stepping reflex
infant is held in an upright position with feet placed on a surface, their legs begin moving in a way that resembles walking
Crawling reflex
Stroking the feet of an infant in the prone position will elicit movement that resembles crawling
Head and body righting
Head righting: when the body moves into different positions, the head orients vertically
Body righting: when the head rotates away from the midline, the body adjusts to align with the head
Parachuting reflex
Propping movements in response to being moved off balance forwards, downwards, sidewards, and backwards
symmetrical tonic neck reflex (STNR)
When the neck flexes, the upper limbs also flex and lower limbs extend
