Primitive reflexes Flashcards
What is the Fear paralysis reflex (FPR)?
Freezing reaction - similar to deer in headlights
Protective mechanism as a response to perceived threats
When does the FPR start and end?
5-8th week in utero and should end before birth
What are the signs of retention of FPR?
Anxiety Poor self esteem Sleep/ eating disorders Aggression Fear of failure or embarrassment Phobias
What is the Moro reflex?
Instant arousal of survival systems
Automatic reaction to a sudden change in sensory stimuli (Startle/ F/F)
When does the Moro reflex start and end?
birth to 2-4mths
What are the signs of retention of Moro reflex?
Hyper sensitivity/ reactivity
Poor impulse control
Sensory overload
Emotional immaturity
When does the Rooting reflex start and end?
birth to 3-4 months
What is the Rooting reflex?
Assists finding food/ breast
Baby turns towards touch on cheek
What are the signs of retention of Rooting reflex?
Picky eater
thumb sucking
Dribbling
Speech and articulation issues
When does the Palmar reflex start and end?
birth to 5-6 months
What is the Palmar reflex?
Assists grasp development
Hand closes when object placed in palm
What are the signs of retention of Palmar reflex?
Poor fine motor skills
Poor manual dexterity/ handwriting
When does the Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex (ATNR) start and end?
birth to 6 months
What is the ATNR?
Assist through birth canal and crossing
Head turned to side will cause ipsilateral limbs to extend and contralateral limbs to bend
What are the signs of retention of ATNR?
Difficulty with hand eye coordination, handwriting, crossing vertical midline and visual tracking
What is the Symmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex (STNR)?
Prep for crawling
Arms bend and legs extend when head is bent down, arms straighten and legs bend when head is bent backward
What are the signs of retention of STNR?
Slump while sitting Poor muscle tone W sitting Poor hand eye coordination inability to sit still and concentrate
When does the STNR start and end?
6-9 months to 9-11 months
What is the Tonic Labrynthine Reflex (TLR)?
Head management and posture stability
Head forward: body/ limb flexion
Head backward: body/ limb extension
What are the signs of retention of TLR?
Poor muscle tone W sitting Poor balance Motion sickness Poor spatial orientation Gravitational insecurity
When does the TLR start and end?
in utero to 3.5 yrs
What is the Spinal Galant Reflex?
Assists baby with birth process, crawling and creeping
Hip rotation when back is touched on either side of the spine
What are the signs of retention of Spinal Galant Reflex?
Unilateral or bilateral posture issues, figdeting, bedwetting, clothing issues, poor concentration and poor short term memory
When does the Spinal Galant Reflex start and end?
Birth to 3-9 months
