primary research methods Flashcards
What to consider when it comes to design ethics?
- Be honest
- Demonstrate sensitivity about user needs
- Obtain consent and permission
- Do no harm
- Ensure participant data is safe
- Value and optimize time
- Reference without plagiarism
Design ethics in user studies. what do you have to make sure you’ve done?
some studies need clearance from ethical committies.
storage of user data needs to follow GDPR law (consent, anonymity, non-tracible, safe storage).
what is exploratory research?
research around a topic where little or none is known
what is the purpose of exploratory research?
- Gain a deep understanding and familiarity on the data you gather
- Find out how this data can be used in the future
what does research in design rely on?
selecting parts of different disciplines to create a fitting framework (social anthropology, psychology, etc…)
what is Contextual inquiry?
a type of study that includes observations and interviews of users
describe unobtrusive observation
observation without attracting attention to the subject.
Observation of the subject to see how they perform a task undisturbed
describe direct obervation
observing the subject while think aloud is being used. This form of observation requires a preparatory meeting with the subject to prepare the user of the upcoming observation.
Pros and cons of observations
pros:
- rich data and firsthand info
cons:
- time consuming
- you need to be a good observer
describe unstructured interviews
usually occurs after an observation when there are more answers needed.
best way to record these are audio or a notebook
what are structured interviews?
interviews with pre-planned questions
when selecting a user, what should you consider?
- why (in relation to the subject of the study)
- where is the source
- how many
- age
- gender
- level
describe the flow of an interview (5 steps).
- icebreaker: make participant at ease and take permission and consent
- introduction: bring upt the topic and purpose of the stuy. Remember to tell them they are not being judged.
- main part: gather insight, give pre-planned tasks and use think aloud.
- summary: any other questions (usually unstructured)
- wrap up
what types of card sorting are there?
closed card sorting
open card sorting
hybrid card sorting
what is the diary method?
A method to get input from user over an extended period of time. it is a form of indirect obervation.
