Definition
a distinct clinical entity with multiple etiologies, characterized by hypergonadotrophic hypogonadism in women aged younger than 40 years
Early menopause
Menopause occurring between ages of 40-45. These women are also at increased risk for the LT effects of early estrogen deficiency. ACOG supports the use of HT for women with POI and early menopause until the average age of menopause
Etiologies
(1) Genetic (2) Autosomal effects (3) Toxic, infectious and metabolic
Genetic Disorders
(1) X Chromosome disorders (including Turner Syndrome); (2) Disorders of the X chromosome (including Fragile X syndrome); (3) mutations involving other enzymes and reproductive hormones
Autosomal Effects
- Autoimmune polyendocrine syndromes 2. Dry eye syndrome 3. Myasthenia gravis 4. Rhematioc arthtis 5. Systemic Lupus erythematosus 6. Congenetical thymic aplasia
Toxic, infectious, and metabolic
(1) Infections - mumps, HIV (2) tabacco smoke and fossil fuel (3) metabolic - PCOS
Iatrogenic
Surgical menopause or Chemotherapy/radiation induced menopause
