Thymus

What is the function of the thymus?
Thymocytes mature into T cells
specific receptors are expressed
T cells recognize self from self
What receptors are acquired by prothymocytes in the thymus?
CD3, CD4, CD8
elimination by apoptosis if dont recognize MHC I, II (positive selection)
if dont recognize self apoptosis (negative selection)
What are the secondary lymphoid organs?
spleen
lymph nodes
payer patches
tonsils
What is the function of the spleen?
filters out antigens from blood
white pulp - lymphoid tissue
Red pulp - splenic cord and sinuses (RBCs)
What is MALT, GALT and BALT?
mucosa associated lymphoid tissue
gut associated lymphoid tissue
bronchus associated lymphoid tissue
