Describe the roles of a GP partner
- First point of pt contact.
- Most work in consultations and home visits
- Allows individual Dr’s wide chose of where to practice, with whom and how
- Provide complete spectrum of community care – problems w/ physical, psychological and social components
- Increasingly work w/ other professions in teams to help pts take responsibility for health
- Independent contractors to NHS – means in most cases responsible for providing adequate premises from which to practice and employing own staff
Describe the roles of a nurse practitioner
Have direct supervision of practice health care assistants
Involved in most aspects of primary care including:
- blood samples
- ECGs
- minor and complex wound management (including leg ulcers)
- travel health and vaccinations
- child immunisations and advice
- family planning
- women’s health including cervical smears
- men’s health screening
- sexual health services
- smoking cessation
Describe the role of the district nurse
- Visits patients in their own homes, support both patients and family members
- teaching and support role
- are accountable for their own case loads
- minimise hospital admissions/readmissions
- assess healthcare needs of patients and families
- monitor quality of care being received
Describe the role of the midwife in the primary health care team
Provide care during all stages of pregnancy, labour and early postnatal period
- may be community based or hospital based
Describe the role of the health visitor in the primary health care team
Lead and deliver child and family health services (up to five years of age)
- work with prents to assess support needs and develop appropriate programs to give child the best start in life
- support and educate families from pregnancy to fifth birthday
- offer parenting support and advice on minor illnesses
- new birth visits including weaning
- physical and deveopmental checks
- other subjects such as post-natal depression
- identify vulnerable families
- recognising risk factors, and ensuring that a child is protected
Describe the role of the macmillan nurse
Specialised in cancer and palliative care, provide support and information to patients and families from point of diagnosis onwards
- specialised pain and symptom control
- emotional support
- variety of settings
- information about treatments and side effects
- coordinated care between hospital and home
- (do not carry out routine nursing tasks)
Describe the role of the pharmacists
- work in hospital, community or primary care pharmacies
- ensure patients get max benefits of medicines
- advise medical and nursing staff on selection and apporpriate use of medicines
- provide info to patients to manage medicines to ensure optimal treatment
- undertake additional training to allow to prescribe for specific conditions
