A
  • First point of pt contact.
  • Most work in consultations and home visits
  • Allows individual Dr’s wide chose of where to practice, with whom and how
  • Provide complete spectrum of community care – problems w/ physical, psychological and social components
  • Increasingly work w/ other professions in teams to help pts take responsibility for health
  • Independent contractors to NHS – means in most cases responsible for providing adequate premises from which to practice and employing own staff

Describe the roles of a nurse practitioner

A

Have direct supervision of practice health care assistants
Involved in most aspects of primary care including:
- blood samples
- ECGs
- minor and complex wound management (including leg ulcers)
- travel health and vaccinations
- child immunisations and advice
- family planning
- women’s health including cervical smears
- men’s health screening
- sexual health services
- smoking cessation

  • support and educate families from pregnancy to fifth birthday

  • physical and deveopmental checks
  • other subjects such as post-natal depression
  • identify vulnerable families
  • recognising risk factors, and ensuring that a child is protected
