Primary Chemistry Flashcards

1
Q

What are the Four reasons for maintaining primary chemistry control?

A
  1. Maintain material integrity.
  2. minimize corrosion.

Q

What do we use to control oxygen content in the RCS at power?

A

We add Hydrogen to the VCT that acts as a blanket and scavenges oxygen.

Q

How do we control oxygen while starting up in mode 5 (<200*f)

A

We add Hydorzine which scavages oxygen to the CVCS chemical addition pot in the BAST room.

6
Q

Why do we not add Hydorzine at temperatures greater than 200*F?

A

Hydorzine breaks down at temperatures greater thatn 200*f.

7
Q

Why must the CVCS ion exchangers be bypassed with Hydorzine present in the RCS?

A

The Hydroxine will exhaust the resin and the subsequent releace of undesirable chemicals into the RCS.

Q

What do we add to the RCS for pH control?

A

We use enriched lithium-7 to raise pH.

pH lowers when we use Boric Acid for Reactivity control.

10
Q

Why do we use enriched Lithium-7 as a pH control additive?

A

Because natural Lithium-6 produces tritium.

12
Q

Why do we let the lithium concentration in the RCS lower over core life?

A

Later in core life we are not adding Boron for reactivity control so pH remains slightly caustic.

16
Q

What type of resin is used in a cation bed?

A

H+

17
Q

What resin is used in the De-borating demineralizer?

A

OH-

18
Q

When and why do we use a Deborating demineralizer.

A

At the end of core life because as boron concentration lower it takes more water to lower concentration.

19
Q

Why could differential pressure change across a demineralizer?

A

High DP could indicate fouling (pluged)

Low DP could indicate channeling.

20
Q

List 6 different gasses that would normally be present in the RCS.

A
  1. Oxygen
  2. Nitrogen
  3. Argon
  4. Helium
  5. kryoton
  6. Xenon
21
Q

State the Three locations in the RCS or subsystems where RCS gasses could be removed.

A
  1. VCT (degass)
  2. Boric Acid Evap. (gas stirpper)
  3. CVCS HUT’s (comes out of solution due to low pressure).
  4. Pressurizer spray.
