What do you do if you are unsure if the patient is breathing?

A

Open the airway using the head tilt chin lift. Place your hand on the forehead and tilt the head back. With fingertips under the chin lift the chin to open the airway. Check for normal breathing and chest movement. Give CPR if not breathing normally.

What is the alternative to the head tilt chin lift?

A

The pistol grip lift.

With your thumb and index finger make a pretend hand gun, place them together like you’ve fired the gun. Place your hand along the patients jawline with your thumb below the patients lip and index finger below the chin.
Open the patients mouth and place your other hand on the patients forehead
Gently lift the patients jaw with your middle finger and tilt the head back

A

Ask a bystander to call EMS if the patient is unresponsive and secure and AED if possible. If you are alone call with a mobile or if you don’t have a phone leave the patient and call EMS first

A

Place the arm nearest to you out at a right angle
Bring the far arm across the chest and hold the back of the hand against the patients cheek
With your other hand grasp the far leg just above the knee and pull it up keeping the foot on the ground
Gently pull the patient towards you putting them on their side

A

Must be kept in the recovery position for more than 30 minutes
