Primary and secondary hazards of earthquakes Flashcards
Every earthquake is unique but they have common hazards which are either
Primary (a direct result of the earthquake)
Secondary (a result of the primary hazards)
primary hazards of earthquakes
Ground shaking
Crustal fracturing (when the movement causes the Earth’s crust to crack)
secondary hazards
landslides and avalanches
liquefaction
flooding
flooding
tsunami
What is liquefaction
Affects poorly compacted sand and silt.
● Water moisture within the soil separates from the soil particles and rises to the
surface.
● This can cause the soil to behave like a liquid, which can cause building subsidence
or landslides.
What are landslides and avalanches
the movement of the Earth may trigger the collapse of material down steep slopes
