Primary and Secondary data Flashcards
1
Q
What is primary data?
A
- Information collected directly from participants by researchers for their own research aim
- Will obtain 1st hand knowledge of behaviour to test a specific hypothesis
2
Q
What are possible sources of primary data?
A
- Interviews
- Test in an experiment
- Observation
3
Q
What are the strengths of primary data?
A
- Investigator has full control over the study
- Researcher can pick the sample
4
Q
What are the weaknesses of primary data?
A
- Takes a lot longer to do
- No comparisons can be made to other research
5
Q
What is secondary data?
A
- Collected or created by someone else for their own purposes
- Not directly gathered from participants
6
Q
What are the possible sources of secondary data?
A
- Crime statistics
- Government census data
- Meta analysis
7
Q
What is a meta analysis?
A
Researchers examine the results of several previous studies by combining and analysing results from a number of studies on a particular topic to provide an overall conclusion
8
Q
What are the strengths of secondary data?
A
- Relatively quick to do
- Comparisons can be made to other research
9
Q
What are the weaknesses of secondary data?
A
- Investigator doesn’t have full control over the study
- Researcher can’t pick the sample
