- a parasite that lives inside the host
- intestinal parasits: roundworm, hookworm, tapeworm, whipworm
- heartworm (mostly in dogs; cat can also get but rarer)

What is sterilization?
A
- surgery to remove the reproductive organs of animals, so as to prevent the animal from reproducing
- irreversible
- performed under anaesthesia
- performed on both females and males
- ideally around 6 months old when animals reach sexual maturity

What is the purpose of sterilization?
A
- prevent unwanted pregnancies
- prevents the development of reproductive system cancers and infections (close to 100% effectiveness if done before 1st heat cycle, effectiveness decreases with every heat cycle)

- Female: ovariohysterectomy/spay
- Male: orchidectomy/castration/neutering
