what should ferrets be vaccinated for?
distemper

what is a common side effect with vaccinating ferrets?
anaphylactic reactions… hyperaemia, vomiting, hyper salivation, diarrhoea, cyanosis
how can ferret vaccine reactions be prevented?
reconstitute vaccine in sterile saline rather than solvent
diphenhydramine (anti-histamine) before vaccine
only give one vaccine at a time
(monitor ferrets post vaccination)
what can be given to treat ferret vaccine reaction?
adrenaline, diphenhydramine, dexamethasone
what should racoon-dogs and foxes be vaccinated for?
distemper
what should racoons and coatis be vaccinated for?
distemper and panleucopaenia
what should meerkats be vaccinated for?
distemper
what should pigeons be vaccinated for?
avian pox and pigeon paramyxovirus
what exotics commonly get oxyurids (pinworms)?
reptiles, rabbits and sometimes rodents
why do female ferrets need to be mated?
they are induced ovulators, hence will stay in oestrus if not mated
this will lead to hyperoestrogenism which cause bone marrow suppression, and hence aplastic anaemia
what disease is an increased risk in neutered ferrets?
adrenal gland disease (surgical neutering isn’t advised)
why are neutered ferrets at risk of adrenal gland disease?
gonads provide negative feedback on hypothalamus, if this is removed then adrenal function will no longer be suppressed
how can ferrets be chemically neutered?
deslorelin implants (every 1-2 years)
