Pressure System Flashcards
Low pressure or cyclone
Low or Cyclone: A region of low pressure shown by concentric isobars surrounding the centre, where the pressure is lowest.
- Characterised by rising air
- Always accompanied by cloud and precipitation
Characteristics of low pressure
Good visibility, except in precipitation
Significant cloud Significant precipitation
Strong winds; -anti-clockwise in the northern hemisphere
-clockwise in the southern hemisphere
High Pressure or Anti cyclone
Visible pollutants - smoke, dust, etc.
- trapped beneath inversion causing poor visibility
- Less cloud formation
- Lighter winds due to a weaker PGF
Characteristic of a high pressure
Poor visibility from fog, mist or haze
Little cloud formation
No precipitation
Light winds: -clockwise in the northern hemisphere
anti-clockwise in the southern hemisphere
