pressure in gases Flashcards
1
Q
what can pressure changes do to a gas?
A
compress or expand it
2
Q
what does pressure produce?
A
a net force at right angles to the wall of the gas container
3
Q
equation
A
pV = constant
4
Q
explain how increasing the volume in which a gas is contained, at constant temperature, can lead to a decrease in pressure
A
- increasing volume means the particles spread out more
- so they hit the container walls less often
- so less collisions with it
- so less force exerted
- so a decrease in pressure
5
Q
how can a change in pressure cause a change in volume?
A
- pressure of a gas causes a net outwards force at right angles to the surface of its container
- also a force on the outside of the container due to the pressure of the gas around it
- if a container can easily change its size, than a change in pressures will cause container to compress or expand due to the overall force
