Q

explain how increasing the volume in which a gas is contained, at constant temperature, can lead to a decrease in pressure

A
  • increasing volume means the particles spread out more
  • so they hit the container walls less often
  • so less collisions with it
  • so less force exerted
  • so a decrease in pressure

Q

how can a change in pressure cause a change in volume?

A
  • pressure of a gas causes a net outwards force at right angles to the surface of its container
  • also a force on the outside of the container due to the pressure of the gas around it
  • if a container can easily change its size, than a change in pressures will cause container to compress or expand due to the overall force
