What is a pressure group?
An organised group of people that aims to influence the policies/actions of government.
What are interest groups?
Sectional groups- represent a certain ‘section’ of society e.g., TUs.
Membership linked to particular occupation/part of society e.g., National Union of Teachers
What are cause groups?
Promotional groups- seek to promote a particular cause e.g., charities.
Anyone can join…. e.g., Greenpeace.
What are social movements?
Similar to cause groups but lack formal structure.
Usually radical, aim to achieve single objective.
E.g., gay rights.
What are insider groups?
Regularly talk with govt, common access to ministers e.g., CBI (Confederation of British Industry),
Can be high or low profile.
Tend to influence as aims are broadly in line with govt views.
What are outsider groups?
Have no links/access to govt.
Use other ways e.g., media, to make impact.
E.g., Animal Liberation Front.
