What is a pressure group?
A single issue group that wants to bring around change
What are the four types of pressure groups?
Insider, Outsider, Cause and Interest
What is an insider pressure group?
They have contact with decision makers and can influence outcomes (RSPCA)
What is an outsider pressure group?
They have little influence with decision makers and find it difficult to bring around change. (UK Uncut)
What is a cause pressure group?
They are trying to bring about change to improve things, not benefitting themselves. (RSPCA)
What is an interest pressure group?
They work for the benefit of their members (CBI, Institute of Directors)
What are 3 examples that show that pressure groups are better at achieving change than individuals?
Force in numbers.
Full time staff can be employed to keep the issue in the public eye.
More money available.
What are two rights that a pressure group has?
The right to demonstrate- Oct 2014 the TUC and the living wage campaign got 90 thousand people to take to the streets to campaign for the living wage.
The right to set up a Twitter/ Facebook campaign.
What are two responsibilties that a pressure group has?
To set up a website and produce campaign materials- 2014, 16 year old girl in Bristol began campaign called FGM to stop female genitalia mutilation and got more than two hundred thousand signatures and since their has been a change regarding this issue.
Being peaceful- UK Uncut went into a bank and made a nursery as a demonstration.
What are 3 methods used by pressure groups?
Write letters -RSPCA because they are an insider cause group
Demonstrations- UK Uncut in the bank
Employ political consultants to help their campaign
