What is an outsider pressure group?
Pressure groups that want to maintain distance from the gov, eg Just Stop Oil
What is an insider pressure group?
A PG that works with the gov to attempt to make change, eg National Farmers Union

David Cameron lobbying Rishi Sunak via personal text scandal
Methods used by PGs
Public demonstration, go to the media, make grants to political parties
What factors make a pressure group successful?
Large size, good funding, public mood
What factors make a PG unsuccessful?
Small size, poor, powerful groups on the opposite argument
“PGs help enhance democracy”
Help disperse power, educate the public, give opportunity to participate in politics
“PGs harm democracy”
Elitist groups, may distort info for self-interest
What is a think tank?
An independent research group that can be hired by any political group. eg ResPublica, Demos
What is a lobbyist firm?
Groups you can hire to push your political agenda, David Cameron now works for one
Difference between civil liberties and human rights?
Civil liberties are given by the state, HRs are for everyone
How did the HRA (1998) impact rights in the UK?
They encoded human rights into law, allows legal punishment of HR violations within the UK
Why should the UK adopt a British Bill of Rights?
Arguably could clear up problems such as rights of an individual vs the majority
