What is EXOP?
The executive office of the president
What is the NSC and what do they do?
National security council - national security + foreign policy, president and vice, Secretary of State and defence etc
What is the White House office under EXOP?
Headed by White House chief of Staff. Assistants of president oversee policy and political matters
What is the office of management and budget under EXOP?
Largest department , produced budget, oversee financial aspects of policy.
What must the director of EXOP be confirmed by and what fraction must support the vote?
Confirmed by senator vote- 2/3 of vote required
What is the presidents constitutional responsibility?
To ensure laws are faithfully executed
Executive orders- What’s an example of a president pursuing an objective of legislation?
Kennedy and Johnson- support civil right legislation
Reagan and bush- not support “affirmative action”
Do presidential decisions need congressional approval?
No unless they need congressional appropriations
What is the state of the union address?
Message from president to congress given once a year
President talks about issues america faces and sets outs government plans
What percent of bills considered by congress carry the stamp of the executive branch (outlined in SOU adress)
50% and 80%
What is the uk equivalent of the state of union adress?
The opening of parliament with the annual kings speech
What are two significant addresses within the SOU adress?
LBJ-(war v poverty)

What do the presidential veto allow the president to do?
Block congressionally initiated legislation
What did Reagan threaten to do regarding a veto bill?
Threatened to veto bills that increased spending for social programmes
What is the pocket veto?
Allowed 10 days to consider the bill before it signs into law.
Can ignore bill that arrives on desk less than 10 days before end of congressional session
