What is there a clear divide between?
national and state parties. For example Trump may be the president of the Rep party and US but he cannot exercise too much power in congress and was elected in a nationwide election, x as a party leader in an internal party election- Like British PMs
What is the only manifestation of permanent party structure at national level?
national committees of each party- DNC and RNC. Both have offices in Washington DC, each has a chair .
Who elected who for the chair of the national committees recentley?
after 2016 election, Trump nominated Ronna Romney McDaniel- niece of 2012 rep presidential nominee Mitt Romney, and His daughter Lara Trump as co chair.
Feb 2017, DNC elected former sec of labour Tom Perez, beating representative Keith Ellison of Minnesota in what seen as victory for H Clinton wing of party over Sanders. Now its Jamie Harrison
What do national committees do?
raise money, hire staff and coordinate election strategy for party’s candidates for local, state and national office. Also responsible for organizing national party convention that meets during the summer of each presidential election year.
What is the DNC and the RNC made up of?
DNC- chair and vice chair of each of the state democratic parties, plus further 200 elected members appointed to state parties on basis of state population.
RNC- chair of each state Rep party, plus 2 committee members from each state party- one man and one women
What is congressional leadership and committees?
at national level, each arty has its congressional leadership as well as committees to oversee elections to each house of congress- Democratic senatorial campaign committee, National Rep senatorial committee, Democratic congressional campaign committee and national rep campaign committee
How does leadership work in party organisation?
Parties don’t have a clear leader reflecting both the separation of powers and federalism, example- leaders in different branches, like congress, president and then the states.
What are associated groups in party organisation?
their are loosely affiliated groups- e.g.- Democratic socialists of America. 50,000 members and helps secure victory of progressive democrats but independent from democratic party organization
Main party id powerful. McConnell lead removal of Steve king for racist comments. Also lost seat in big committee.
What did Bush say he was?- parties and their ideologies?
“compassionate conservative”- south tends to be more condervative, the north east and west coast tend to be more liberal
What do Democrats tend to be more progressive on?- key differences on key policies?
democrats tend to be more progressive on social and moral issues and issues relating to law and order. Favour greater gov intervention both in economy and on social welfare issues such as education and healthcare
What do Republicans focus on?- key differences on key policies?
Focus on individualism w government playing ,much limited role in economy as well as social and moral issues. example- Dobbs ruling
Explain democrats and their ideologies?
era of hyper-partisanship, number who call selves moderates, centrists/ consevatives in dem party has diminished. Last 4 presidential nominees not used these labels.
Clinton vs Sanders ideological battle, Clinton was moderate where as Sanders offered “democratic socialist alternative”
What are “social conservatives”- Republicans and their ideologies?
conservative on social, moral and religious issues, moderate on economic issues
What are “fiscal conservatives”-Republicans and their ideologies?
joined the tea party movement to fight for reduction of national debt, government spending and lowering federal taxes
What is Trump considered?- Republicans and their ideologies?
“Post ideology”, not conservative, opposed to free trade and protect some entitlement programmes from budget cuts, also not liberal republican either, appoint conservative judges, economic nationalism in “America first”
What key policies do democrats tend to9 support?
stricter environmental controls, example- green new deal aiming to tackle climate change. increasing spending on social welfare programmes, gay rights and same sex marriage
What key policies do Democrats not tend to support?
stricter controls on immigration, example- dreamers that helped youth immigrants gain citizenship., high levels of defence spending, cutting federal taxes, death penalty
What key policies do Republicans tend to support?
idea that the federal government should do less, example- Reagan when he said “most terrifying 9 words in English language are “I’m from the govt and I’m here to help”,, high levels of defence spending, death penality.
What key policies do Republicans tend to not support?
stricter environmental controls, example- Trump leaving Paris accords which was an international binding treaty on climate change, women’s rights on abortion, example- national abortion ban, “Obamacare”
