What are the three types of prescribers?
Standard prescribers (doctors, dentist)
Supplementary prescribers ( can prescribe in accordance with a clinical management plan (pharmacist, midwife)
Independent prescribers (can prescribe any licensed pom within area of competence)
State the legal requirements in an NHS Rx
- Age and/or DOB if under 12
- Patient name + address
- Date (dispensed within 6 months)
- Signed in ink by prescriber
- Type of prescriber (Dr, Dentist)
What are the legal requirements for controlled drugs?
- Drug name
- Form
- Strength
- Quantity in words and figures
- Directions
What does the green NHS Rx include?
-GPs (FP10)
-Nurse Prescribers ( FP10NC)
-Pharmacist prescribers (FP10SS)
-Hospital doctors
(outpatient) (FP10HNC)
What does the Yellow NHS Rx include?
-Dentist (FP10D)y
*can only prescribe drugs listed in Dental Practitioners’ Formulary
What does the purple NHS Rx include
Community/ Independent Prescribers (FP10SP)
*Can only prescribe items listed in nurse Practitioners’ Formulary
What does the Blue NHS Rx include?
Substance misuse patients (FD10MDA)
How can you spot a forged Rx
- Drug liable to misuse
- Large excessive quantity
- Amendments
- “Dr” in signature
- Patient’s appearance - agitated, nervous
What are the types of electronic Rx service tokens
Paper copy of the electronic prescription
- Green= prescribing token
- White = Dispensing token
Token not signed by a prescriber
State the clinical considerations of a drug
- Drug name
- Drug strength
- Drug Form
- Drug Quantity
- Directions
What are the clinical considerations of a drug on the patient?
- Disease
- Dosage Form

- Can be on any paper
- Same req. as NHS prescriptions
