You are faced with an actor playing a 65-year-old man who has just been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. He is coming to his GP for advice on how to cope with his diagnosis, as he has heard a lot of stigma over the years about dementia and its burden on both his family and the healthcare service. While talking to you, he breaks down into tears. How do you respond to the patient?
be empathetic towards the pt and console the pt, advise them on the latest developments with alzheimer dementia, advise them to join support groups, reassure them that their is less stigma surrounded dementia now a days.
you are about to administer a child a vaccination, how will you communicate with the child about the vaccination?
adapt your communication to a level that the child will understand , no medical jargon, explain the process of administering the med, do not over explain ( not enough time)
you are house sitting for a friend, while they were away you tell them that you accidentally broke their favourite ornament, when you tell them the news they become hysterical- how do you communicate with the patient?
make small tal prior to telling them, prepare them for the bad news, they them the news ( be very apologetic and empathize with them), stay calm, ask if there is anything you could do to remedy the situation ( offer financial compensation)
a person with developmental disadvantages is asking you to tie their shoes for them. In the process they are becoming agitated and frustrated. how do you respond?
Hi I understand that having your shoes undone in frustrating for you, I myself don’t like it either. is it okay if I try to tie them for you? ( if you have anything further like an easy trick to tie their shoes for the future).
how would you deliver a death notification to a family?
be very empathetic, take off your gloves/goggles/ other unecessary equipment, Find their family tell non essential members to leave the room, Tell them that despite your best efforts the pt had died, tell them what life saving interventions were done for the pt, say that you are so sorry, offer to grab them water, help them to sit, ask them if their is anyone you should call for them or anything you can help them with.
you have to do a group project with someone you have never met before, ho do you go about starting the work?
introduce yourself be friendly, allow them to introduce themselves, make light small talk. decide each-others strengths and weaknesses w the topics of discussion. Divide up the work equally in a way that makes sense for the both of you.
what is your greatest weakness?
be authentic and true ( public speaking, perfectionism, requiring structure, being assertive)
what do you think your greatest strength is ?
customer service skills, ability to empathize with a patient, ability to stay calm and separate work life from home etc, organization, in ability to sit still.
tell me about a time that you had made a mistake?
when at work I gave a customer the incorrect amount of change and realized after they had drove past my window. Once I recognized the discrepancy I ran to the next window hoping to catch the before they had left the dt. I did get their in time. I apologized and explained to them that I hadn’t realized until they had driven past, I gae them their respective change and apologized once more and wished them a great rest of their day.
