Preparing/Conducting the Assessment Flashcards
What is the first phase of clinical assessment?
Groth-Marnat, 2009
Evaluating the referral question - need to determine what is being asked to evaluate
What is the second phase of clinical assessment?
Groth-Marnat, 2009
Acquiring the knowledge relating to the content of the problem - need to consider the referral problem and determine which assessment measures are most appropriate for the referral question and the individual
What is the third phase of clinical assessment?
Groth-Marnat, 2009
Data collection - obtain the necessary information to answer the referral question
This can come from a variety of sources including test scores, personal history, behavioral observations, school records, medical reports, etc.
What is the fourth phase of clinical assessment?
Groth-Marnat, 2009
Interpreting the data - be able to describe the client’s present level of functioning and considerations relating to etiology, prognosis, and treatment recommendations
Focus on the influence of several interacting factors rather than simplistic formulas
What additional tasks must be completed prior to beginning the assessment?
Clarify the purpose and expectations with the client
Obtain consent/assent
State your role as the evaluator
Describe the assessment process (what will occur during the various meetings)
Determine the goal of the assessment
Identify if the results need to be sent anywhere
What are the 4 pillars of assessment?
Sattler, 2001
Behavioral observations
Outside sources
Use norm-referenced, standardized tests with solid psychometric properties
Clinical interview
What factors go into behavioral observations?
Motor functioning Reaction to testing Speech Distress level Effort/motivation Frustration tolerance Emotion/affect Capacity for sustained attention/concentration Thought processes Temporary states (fatigue, anxiety, energy)
When do behavioral observations occur?
Chethik, 2003
Beginning in the waiting room and continuing throughout all interactions
What information should be gathered during the psychosocial history?
Developmental milestones Relationships to others Early childhood behavior Functioning across different settings Mental/medical history Substance use history
What things should be assessed for in the interview?
Recent changes, disruptions, or major losses
Understanding and presence of developmentally appropriate behaviors
