Prepared passage: The bag of winds

Question 1

“ὁ δ’ Αἴολος καλῶς ἐξένισεν ημᾶς.

Answer 1

Aeolus entertained us finely.

Question 2

καὶ ἐπεὶ την νῆσον ἐλείπομεν, δῶρα θαυμάσια παρέσχεν: τοὺς γὰρ άνεµους ἐν ασκῶ σκυτίνω ἐδέσμευσεν.

Answer 2

And when we were leaving the island, he provided amazing gifts: for he fastened up the winds in a leather bag.

εννέα ημέρας ἀπὸ τῆς του Αἰόλου νήσου ἐπλέομεν.

For nine days we were sailing away from the island of Aeolus.

Question 4

τελος δὲ την Ἰθάκην εἴδομεν.

Finally we saw Ithaca

Question 5

ἀλλ’ υπνος ἔλαβε µε.

Answer 5

But sleep overtook me.

Question 6

ἔπειτα δὲ οἱ ἑταῖοοι εἶπον, “ὁ Ὀδυσσεύς, ανθρώπων πλουσίων φίλος ov, πολλὰ δῶρα ἀεὶ εχει.

Then the companions said “Odysseus, being a friend of wealthy men, always has many gifts.

καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς Τροίας θησαυρὸν φέρει.

And he is bringing treasure from Troy.

ἡμεῖς δ’ οὐδὲν εχοµεν.

Answer 8

But we have nothing

Question 9

καὶ νυν ὁ Αἰολος ἄλλο δῶρον παρέσχεν.

And now Aeolus has provided another gift.

ἆρα χουσος ἐν τω ἀσκῶ ενεστιν;

Is there gold in the bag?”

Question 11

τον οὖν ἀσκὸν ελυσαν.

Answer 11

Therefore they unfastened the bag.

Question 12

καὶ οἱ ἄνεμοι εὐθὺς ἐξέφυγον.

Answer 12

And the winds immediately escaped.

Question 13

χειμὼν μέγιστος τα πλοῖα ἀπὸ τῆς Ἰθάκης πόορω ἤνεγκεν.

A very big storm carried the boats far off from Ithaca.

Question 14

ἐγω ἐγοηγορως ἀθλιώτατος ἡ.

Answer 14

On waking up, I was very miserable.

Question 15

ποὸς οὖν την του Αἰόλου νῆσον βραδέως ἐπανήλθομεν.

And so we returned slowly to the island of Aeolus

ὁ μέντοι Αἴολος θαυμάζων εἶπε, ‘πως πάρει. ὦ Όδυσσευ;

Aeolus however was amazed and said “How come you are here, Odysseus?

Question 17

dea θεὸς κακός επεμψέ σε;

Answer 17

Did an evil god send you?

Question 18

ἐγὼ γὰρ δῶρα παρέχων ἀπέπεμψά σε προς τὴν Ἰθάκην.

Answer 18

For I, providing gifts, sent you towards Ithaca.”

Question 19

“οἵ τε ἑταιροι αἴτιοί εισιν, ὦ Αἴολε, καὶ ὁ ὕπνος.

Answer 19

“My companions are to blame, Aeolus, and sleep.

Question 20

ἀλλα φίλος cv δῶρα αὖθις πάρεχε.

Answer 20

But be a friend and provide gifts again!”

Question 21

ὁ μέντοι Αἴολος εἶπεν, ‘ATO τῆς νήσου εὐθὺς φευγε, ὦ κάκιστε.

Answer 21

Aeolus however said “Flee from my island immediately, you very wicked man!

Question 22

οὗ γὰρ παρέχομεν δῶρα ἀνθρωποις εἰ οἱ θεοὶ εχθροί εἰσιν.’ “

Answer 22

For we do not provide gifts for people if the gods are hostile.”
