repairs and additions, temporary relines, occlusal adjustments, treatment of denture stomatitis
what is included in pre-prosthetic surgery?
remove retained roots/unerupted teeth, remove pathology, improve contours of edentulous areas by reducing bony prominences and hyperplastic soft tissue, eliminate prominent frenal attachments
what is included in periodontal treatment?
establishing health in periodontal tissues, assessing patient motivation, detailed instruction in oral hygiene procedures, scaling and root planing, periodontal surgery
why is orthodontic treatment done before master impressions?
to optimise space and abutment alignment, cleft patients, hypodontia patients, periodontal patients
when should fixed prosthodontic treatment occur?
follow denture design and precede denture construction
what does fixed pros facilitate?
provision of crowns with guide planes, rest seats etc.
why do you prepare teeth
provide rest seats, establish guide surfaces, modify unfavourable survey lines, create retentive areas
what does rest seat preparation do?
produce favourable tooth surface for support, prevent interference with occlusion, reduce prominence of the rest
what are the alternatives to tooth preparation?
produce a rest seat in composite applied to cingulum area, bond a cast metal cingulum to tooth
what shape should posterior rest seats be?
saucer shaped to allow some horizontal movement and dissipation of occlusal forces
if there is no space occlusally to place a clasp what should you do with the occlusal rest?
extend to buccal surface as a channel
what are guide planes
two or more parallel axial surfaces on abutment teeth which limit the path of insertion of a denture
what do guide planes provide
increased, stability, reciprocation, prevention of clasp deformation, improved appearance
