Preparation of Ethers Flashcards
dehydration of alcohol takes place only with
primary alcohols
conditions necessary for dehydration
-primary alcohol
-low temp
otherwise itll form an alkene
why dont secondary and tertiary alcohols form ethers by dehydration
undergoes sn1 pathway and forms alkenes.
IUPAC name for ethers
carbo compound containing lesser carbon atoms +oxy + compound having more carbon atoms
why is bimolecular dehydration not appropriate for the preparation of ethyl methyl ether
not suitable for a mixture of alcohols asit forms an asymmetrical ether
anaesthetic that is no longer in use and why
diethyl ether due to slow effect and unpleasant recovery period
Williams synthesis
alkyl halide reacts with sodium alkoxide to form an ether
williams synthesis is suitable for which compound
all secondary, tertiary(but elimination competes over subtitution) and primary alkyl halides but better results are obtained by primary alkyl halides.
why do tertiary alkyl halides not yield ether sometimes
as alkoxides act as strong bases and not only as nucleophiles, it will react with alkyl halides leading to elimination reactions.
