Prenatal Development Flashcards
3 Periods of Prenatal Development
Preimplantation, Embryonic, Fetal
Preimplantation
1st week
Sperm + ovum = zygote
*trisomy 21: Down syndrome
Embryonic Period
2-8 weeks
Blastocyst > embryo
“Patterning”
*treacher Collins syndrome, rubella, FAS, spins bifida, ectoderm all dysplasia
Fetal Period
9 weeks+
Embryo > fetus
*tetracycline stain
Induction
Cells establish pathways for tissues
Proliferation
Controlled cellular growth and accumulation of byproducts
Differentiation
Change in cells to become distinct
Morphogenesis
Specific tissue structure/form develops
Maturation
Adult function/size attained
Cleveage
Zygote undergoes mitosis and splits into more and more cells after fertilization
Teratogens
Environmentally caused abnormalities:
Drugs, Chemicals, Infections, Radiation
Ectoderm
Comes from epiblast later of bilaminar disk
Mesoderm
epiblasts migrate to hypoblast layer comes from migrated mesenchyme cells
Endoderm
Comes from hypoblast layer of bilaminar disk
Oropharengeal Membrane
Cephailic end (head) of trilaminar disk - no mesoderm (Embryonic period)
