Prelude Flashcards
Evening
One summer evening
(Soft, peaceful, loving, contrasting with the later extreme side of nature)
Dipped
Elfin pinnace; lustily I dipped my oars into the silent lake
(Calm, peaceful, conquering nature, elfin pinnace signifying small and magical)
Peak (important)
When, from behind that craggy steep… a huge peak, black and huge.
(Perilous, dangerous, extreme, Volta as it was safe and peaceful and now switches to a very extreme version of nature, repetition of huge shows fear)
Upreared
Upreared it’s head
(Like the mountain had an intention through the personification)
Stars
Towered up between me and the stars
(Far greater and bigger than he thought, blocks the stars as navigation so he feels lost)
Dreams (important)
Were a trouble to my dreams
(Unsettling image of how nature thought Wordsworth a lesson on its power and to not take it for granted)
