A

Self-Conscious - Extreme self-consciousness that results from negative and self-critical thoughts.

Unworthy - the feeling of unworthiness

Social - It has a central social component which involves fear of being criticized and rejected.

Hidden - Shame can hide in the form of other emotions such as fear, anger and envy.

How can you tell when it’s Healthy Shame?

A

Correction - when shame helps us re-examine ourselves and strive to become better individuals.

Fleeting - It does not last very long; eventually overlooked as new experiences come in.

Self-aware - Feeling shame makes us aware of the negative behaviors we have that we don’t notice ourselves.

A

Self-hate - You internalize external negative criticisms
towards you and repeat them to yourself.

Obsession - when It constantly bothers you whenever even when you make the smallest mistake.

Paralyzing - It prevents you from trying out new things and from enjoying life as a whole.

Withdrawal - Toxic shame may also manifest in anti-social behavior.

Prayer - Fr. Arnold was a prayerful man and offered everything he did for the glory of God.

Community - He thought not only about what he wanted but more so what the local church community needed.

Humility - He was willing to look like a fool in front of
everybody in order to do what he believed was right.

Others - Fr. Arnold, despite his talent and skill, knew that he needed the help of others to succeed.

Who can you talk to and share your shame with?

A

God - God is always listening, even if it feels like he is
not. You are precious to Him more than you know.

Parents - Talk to your parents because they are not
telepathic. You need to verbalize your feelings.

Friends - If you think you parents wont listen to you, confide in a friend you know you can trust.

Professionals - If you don’t trust anyone close, have compassion on yourself, and ask help from a professional such as the school guidance counsellors.

How can you practice courage?

A

Gradual - Start with something small and gradually work your way up.

Visualize Your Goal - Thinking that you are a failure is often a self-fulling prophecy. Belief in success is the first step to succeeding.

Ask yourself - what is more terrifying, fail knowing that you tried or comfortable but filled with regret?

Pray to God - As Christians, we walk by faith, not by sight. Only those who know how to surrender to God will know true freedom.

What was St. Joseph Freinademetz known in his early years in China? Why?

A

The Chinese referred to him as the “foreign devil” as he had a prejudice against the Chinese.

What was St. Joseph’s prejudice against the Chinese?

A

He first believed that China was the kingdom of the devil as everything he saw, maybe the culture of the people, was “hellish and devilry.”

He was also racist to entertain the idea that Europeans are a far superior race as God did not endow the Chinese with the same qualities as the Europeans. Though he adopted the clothing of the Chinese and used the Chinese name “Fu-shenfu”, he was still European in mind and heart, signifying that his acceptance was only on a shallow level.

A

Prejudice in itself is not bad. It helps to keep things simple. It only becomes bad when you act on it and more so if you are unaware of it.

How did St. Joseph overcome his prejudices?

A

Through self-emptying. He realized that to understand the Chinese, he had to be one. As he was studying to convert them, he was able to convert himself, or as he called it - the “transformation of the inner person.” He learned to love China and its people.
