Prelims Flashcards
What makes up the fear of failure?
Self-Conscious - Extreme self-consciousness that results from negative and self-critical thoughts.
Unworthy - the feeling of unworthiness
Social - It has a central social component which involves fear of being criticized and rejected.
Hidden - Shame can hide in the form of other emotions such as fear, anger and envy.
How can you tell when it’s Healthy Shame?
Correction - when shame helps us re-examine ourselves and strive to become better individuals.
Fleeting - It does not last very long; eventually overlooked as new experiences come in.
Self-aware - Feeling shame makes us aware of the negative behaviors we have that we don’t notice ourselves.
How can you tell when it’s Toxic Shame?
Self-hate - You internalize external negative criticisms
towards you and repeat them to yourself.
Obsession - when It constantly bothers you whenever even when you make the smallest mistake.
Paralyzing - It prevents you from trying out new things and from enjoying life as a whole.
Withdrawal - Toxic shame may also manifest in anti-social behavior.
How does shame grow?
Silence - when you don’t tell anyone about what you feel ashamed about.
Secrecy - when you mask your shame with a
different emotion.
Judgement - when you constantly repeat to
yourself the ridicule you hear from others.
What lessons can we learn from St. Arnold from the obstacles he faced when establishing the SVD?
Prayer - Fr. Arnold was a prayerful man and offered everything he did for the glory of God.
Community - He thought not only about what he wanted but more so what the local church community needed.
Humility - He was willing to look like a fool in front of
everybody in order to do what he believed was right.
Others - Fr. Arnold, despite his talent and skill, knew that he needed the help of others to succeed.
How can you cure shame?
Empathy - Share the things you feel ashamed about along with everything else that weighs down
Who can you talk to and share your shame with?
God - God is always listening, even if it feels like he is
not. You are precious to Him more than you know.
Parents - Talk to your parents because they are not
telepathic. You need to verbalize your feelings.
Friends - If you think you parents wont listen to you, confide in a friend you know you can trust.
Professionals - If you don’t trust anyone close, have compassion on yourself, and ask help from a professional such as the school guidance counsellors.
How can you practice courage?
Gradual - Start with something small and gradually work your way up.
Visualize Your Goal - Thinking that you are a failure is often a self-fulling prophecy. Belief in success is the first step to succeeding.
Ask yourself - what is more terrifying, fail knowing that you tried or comfortable but filled with regret?
Pray to God - As Christians, we walk by faith, not by sight. Only those who know how to surrender to God will know true freedom.
