Finals Flashcards
What are mind traps?
They are:
Logical Errors
- Mental Shortcuts
- Subconscious Bias
In the face of the advancements of humanity, we often overlook the fact that we are still flawed in nature; both in body and mind.
Logical Errors
Awareness of the many mind traps can help one identify them before he/she is trapped in these mental shortcuts and/or logical errors.
Mental Shortcuts
However, we must also acknowledge that there are many mind traps that we don’t know of nor can we keep track of every single one hence it is near impossible to completely avoid them.
Subconscious Bias
What are common mind traps human beings are prone to commit?
- Barnum Effect
- Survivorship Bias
- Spotlight Effect
- Sunk Cost Fallacy
- Contrast Effect
- Gamblers Fallacy
- Frequency Illusion
- Halo Effect
- Confirmation Bias
When individuals are given statements that are “specifically for them” when they are generalized statements that are for a majority of people.
Barnum Effect
a common tactic employed in astrology and horoscopes.
Barnum Effect
A mind trap where we only consider or focus on successful outcomes and overlook the failures or losses that didn’t make it to our attention.
Survivorship Bias
When we often feel as though everyone is watching us when in reality, people are seldom interested in other people and are in fact focusing more on themselves and their own public image in the same way that you are.
Spotlight Effect
People are less likely to give up something when they have already invested a lot of time, money and effort into it.
Sunk Cost Fallacy
investing a lot in something does not automatically increase the quality of our investment. Sometimes, the best decision is to let go.
Sunk Cost Fallacy
We often judge the value of something based on similar things that belong to the same category. However, using this strategy can inflate the value of something, if one artificially makes a similar thing look worse.
Contrast Effect
mind trap that occurs when people believe that previous random events affect the probability of future ones
Gamblers Fallacy
A mind trap that causes us to notice and focus on things that we have recently learned or experienced, leading us to believe that they are more popular than they actually are.
Frequency Illusion
A mind trap where we often put more weight on the first things we learn about a person than the things we learn about later.
Halo Effect
We are often more tolerant of peoples bad traits and behavior if they have already established a good first impression.
Halo Effect
A mind trap that causes us to be more attracted to information that confirms our beliefs. This bias occurs because we tend to prefer information that supports our belief, while disregarding or minimizing information that contradicts our beliefs.
Confirmation Bias
This mind trap creates an illusion that the way we see the world is the correct way of looking at it and everyone else is wrong.
Confirmation Bias
is a decision making process with the aim of discovering God’s will.
Discernment
an essential practice for all the faithful as we are inherently flawed. Thus, we are in constant need of God’s guidance in order to make wise decisions in our every day life.
