Preliminary Impressions Flashcards
What are some inelastic/rigid impression materials?
plaster
zinc oxide-eugenol
impression compound
wax
What are some elastic impression compounds?
hydrocolloids
polysulfides
polyethers
silicones
What are some examples of irreversible hydrocolloids?
alginate
salts of alginic acid
What are irreversible hydrocolloids made of?
- diatomaceous earth 60%
- calcium sulfate 16%
- potassium alginate 15%
- zinc oxide 4%
- potassium titanium fluroid 3%
- sodium phosphate 2%
What is calcium sulfate and potassium alginate in an irreversible hydrocolloid?
reactors
What is diatomaceous earth in an irreversible hydrocolloid?
filler which increases strength and stiffness and produces a smooth texture
What is sodium phosphate in an irreversible hydrocolloid?
retarder
What does zinc oxide do in an irreversible hydrocolloid?
influences setting time
What does potassium titanium fluoride do in an irreversible hydrocolloid?
ensures a dense, hard stone cast surface
What impressions should you use liquid hold adhesive on?
plastic impression trays only
(not metal or silicone)
What impressions should you use PVS on?
silicone trays (NOT METAL)
What are the steps for a max alginate impression?
- size correct tray and modifty borders if needed
- have patient wipe palate with gauze
- mix thoroughly
- load tray and set aside
- preload palatal vault with material
- seat tray while retracting lips/cheeks
- hold tray very still for 3 minutes
- remove in one firm motion
- inspect, rinse, disinfect
What should a maxillary preliminary impression include?
- residual ridge
- buccal and labial vestibules
- frenal attachments
- fovea palatinae and vibrating line
- palate
- tuberosities
- hamular notches
What are the steps for mandibular alginate impression?
- patient in upright position
- size tray
- powder and room temp water
- mix, load tray, set aside
- preload buccal vesibules
- partially seat tray in mouth, patient lifts and protudes tongue
- have patient close halfway and pull lip out
- seat and hold tray for 3 minutes
- remove, inspect, rinse, and disinfect
What should the mandibular impressions contain?
- residual ridges
- retromolar pads
- buccal shelf areas
- external oblique ridges
- frenal attachments
- retromylohyoid spaces
- alveololingual sulcus
- labial and buccal vestibules
