Final Impressions/Border Molding Flashcards
What are the steps in complete denture fabrication?
What is a complete denture impression?
a negative registration of the entire denture bearing, stabilizing, and border seal areas present in the edentulous mouth
What is a preliminary impression?
an impression made for the purpose of diagnosis or the construction of a tray
What do you need while making impressions?
a mental picture
What is a minimal pressure impression?
attempt is made to exert as little pressure as possible during impression procedures
- object: capture tissues in their most undisturbed and undisplaced form
What is another name for minimal pressure impression?
mucostatic technique
What is a functional pressure impression?
impression made with the soft tissue under a significant load
- denture base tissue contact during function would be more intimate if tissue is recorded under compression
What type of impression has very runny material?
minimal pressure impression
What type of impression has more viscous material?
functional pressure impression
What is a selective pressure impression?
dentist decides where and how much pressure to place on tissues
- pressure on certain areas
- minimal pressure on other areas
What type of impression do we do?
selective pressure impression
What holds the most pressure on the mandibular denture?
buccal ridge and retromolar pads
How do you select areas of pressure and non-pressure within the same impression?
- wax spacer relief
- drill vent holes in tray
- grind the tray for relief space
- comination of the above
Why use a custom tray?
borders can be modified to control the movable soft tissues around the impression and avoid distorting them
What is the purpose of border molding?
purpose is to define denture border in length, width, shape, and contour
- when completed should resemble anticipated denture border
What are the green stick compound and water bath temps for border molding?
green stick - 123 F
water - 135-140 F
How many mm of space are present betwen vestibular reflection and tray border while bolder molding the maxillary?
2 mm
