Prelim Flashcards
Example of obstructive lung diseases
Asthma, COPD, Bronchioectasis, Bronchiolitis
Diseases the cause weakness of the rspiratory muscles - unable to expand chest wall
Restrictive Lung Dss due to Neuromuscular weakness
Amyolotrophic lateral sclerosis
GBS
Diseases the cause weakness of the rspiratory muscles
Neuromuscular weakness
Anatomic disorders that prevent lung expansion
Restrictive Lung dss due to Chest wall or pleural dss:
Kyphoscoliosis, Ankylosing spondylitis, Pleural Effusion
Can either be restrictive or obstructive
Bronchogenic CA
Metastatic Lung Dss
Pneumonia
Bronchitis
The first thing you should ask a patient with dyspnea
Difficulty in inhaling or exhaling
Acute onset fever
Productive cough
Chills
Pleuritic pain
Typical pneumonia by S. Pneumonia
Retrosternal oppressive pain
Symptoms of anxiety
Pulmonary embolism if massive emboli
Destruction of alveolar septa
Chronic obstruction of the airways
Mitral stenosis - increases work of breathing
Assoc symptoms
Often cough, orthopnea, paroxysmal
nocturnal dyspnea, sometimes wheezing
Mitral stenosis
Chronic productive cough of at least 3 months for 2 consecutive years
Followed by slowly progressive dyspnea
Chronic bronchitis
Slowly progressive dyspnea, mild cough later
Assoc. scant mucoid cough
COPD
Infilitration of interstitial spaces
Progressive dyspnea
Assoc. weakness, fatigue
Diffuse Interstitial Lung Dss
Sarcoidoisis,
widespread neoplasm,
Asbestosis & Idiopathic
Pulmonary Fibrosis)
Dry hacking cough, becoming productive of mucoid sputum
Assoc.
acute febrile
illness, often with
malaise, headache & possible dyspnea
Mycoplasma & viral pneumonia
An acute illness with
chills, high grade fever, dyspnea & chest pain. Often preceded by acute upper respiratory chronic because there are different causes. For example, tract infection
Bacterial pneumonia
