Define culture
Customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group
What are the characteristics of culture?
- Learned - passes from generation to generation
- Range of acceptable behaviors
- Subject to change
- Can’t remain in isolation
Define prejudice
A preconceived judgement or opinion
What are the two types of prejudices?
- Personal prejudice - members of another racial/ethnic group are seen as threats to one’s own personal interests
- Group prejudice - a person conforms to group norms because it appears that it is what is expected
What is intolerance based on?
- Ignorance - not knowing enough
- Indifference - more apathetic towards a specific group
- Limited perception - limited experience
What is a stereotype?
Generalization about a group that is positive or negative
